Life Music

Tuesday, March 8 at 8pm
IEM CUBE, University of Music and Dramatic Arts
Graz/Styria, Austria

IEM presents a solo performance of the Vienna-based composer and improvisor Guenther Albrecht. Life Music is a computer-based transformation of Conway's Game of Life (a cellular automata) for structuring sonic material.

A cellular grid is projected on the town map of Graz/Styria, as well as on 49 loudspeakers of the CUBE. Every cell uses its own audio sample of approximately 10 seconds. The evolving patterns of the Game of Life are responsible for selection, volume and motion of sounds.

IEM CUBE, an acoustic laboratory, is home to a 49-channel sound system using 80 speakers, with a programmed routing and mixing interface that makes the CUBE an ideal playground for acoustic experiments.
